What could be more inviting on a cold, miserable day than to plan a sunny summer holiday? A walking holiday in Slovenia is a perfect choice for July or August. In our area, in the foothills of the Julian Alps, tourism is tiny, so you have an excellent chance of not meeting anyone except a few locals on many of the walks - there aren't many places where you can go on a walking holiday in Europe and have the hills all to yourself in July and August - while the crowds follow each other up the busy routes in Austria, Italy and Switzerland, you can enjoy much the same scenery and relish the extraordinary peace and tranquility.
Another bonus is the prices - at Walk Slovenia we charge no extra for the peak summer months, while most other operators pile on the cost - and you don't get any more for your money!
But perhaps the best reason of all is the weather. Here in Slovenia the weather in July and August is settled high pressure, like most of the summer in central to Southern Europe, so you can expect long, lovely days, with warm and sunny weather often for weeks on end. But as we are based at 900 metres, the altitude always takes the sting out of the heat, making perfect weather for high hill walking! It can be 30 degrees in the valley, a comfy 25 degrees at the hotel, and refreshing late teens on your summit. Then the evenings cool down beautifully so you can sleep comfortably in your bed at night.
We make the most of the summer weather in July and August by cooking as much as possible outside. We have a huge outdoor terrace where we barbecue delicacies such as hot-smoked salmon, served perhaps with fresh organic beans and new potatoes from our garden (summer is also peak veggie time for us in Slovenia), followed by peaches baked in Marsala wine, with home made vanilla ice cream. What more could you want on a relaxing, luxurious and health-improving summer walking holiday?
