New website for Walk Slovenia!
We're delighted to have a new website for walk Slovenia! We've included lots more photos and route maps of our main walks, following feedback from guests who've been on our walking holidays in this corner of Europe. Bookings are going well for 2014 with May and June nearly full. Winter so far in Slovenia has been incredibly mild, with Christmas roses and pussy willow already out, but today winter has arrived and it's snowing as I write.
Lots of guests have asked me why we chose to do walking holidays in Slovenia rather than another European country, so I thought I'd write about our personal perspective about Slovenia. It is a really beautiful country with so much packed into a tiny area - the highest Alpine peaks to Venetian coastal towns in under 2 hours; gorges, turquoise rivers, totally unspolit nature (hearing nothing other than bird song when walking is the norm not the exception here); old crafts and customs still loved by the people in the countryside, a way of life which is simple but still prosperous (guests are always surprised by the cleanliness, lack of litter, the prettiness of the houses). The locals around the Skofja Loka hills where we are based are so friendly and guests have the rare feeling when on holiday of being truly welcomed as an individual and not seen as a cash machine, which is sadly often the case when in the more touristically developed countries of the world. We normally walk all day and not see another visitor or tourist, even in July and August. So, to sum up, it's the unspoilt nature of the country and the people which make this part of Slovenia truly special and we feel very lucky to live here!
